Impact snap RSL's 3-game winning streak
Omar Browne scored in the second minute of first-half stoppage time and Saphir Taider converted a second-half penalty kick, then the Montreal Impact held on to end visiting Real Salt Lake's three-game winning streak with a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night.
In the waning seconds of the first half, Browne took a pinpoint cross from Shamit Shome, kept possession in traffic and drilled a left-footed grounder past Salt Lake keeper Nick Rimando for his second goal of 2019. It was the Impact's first goal in the first half since March 16.
Then after Salt Lake's Donny Toia fouled Bacary Sagna in the box, Taider converted from the spot in the 68th minute for his fifth of the season. The victory halted an 0-2-1 stretch for the Impact (7-6-3, 24 points), who were without injured star Ignacio Piatti.
RSL (6-7-1, 19 points), which entered amid their longest winning stretch of the season and victors in five of their last seven, pulled one back in the 84th minute on Sam Johnson's fifth of the season -- aided by some poor Montreal defense. However, it was all the visitors could manage while falling to 0-4-0 all time at Montreal.
The Impact nearly scored in the second minute as Taider hit the crossbar. Less than a minute later, Rudy Camacho's direct header was saved by Rimando.
Real Salt Lake's first good chance came at the 20 minute-mark, when Jefferson Savarino's shot from outside the box was saved by the Impact's Evan Bush. RSL teammate Damir Kreilach offered a similar chance in the 41st minute, but Bush made an easy catch on the direct attempt.
Browne's late goal, meanwhile, stunned Salt Lake, which threatened in the 48th minute when Johnson's successful header was negated by a clear offside call.
Real Salt Lake did, however, show life after going down 2-0, threatening in the final third -- especially over the match's final 10 minutes. The Impact, though, played just well enough defensively to keep the visitors to that one goal and walk away with the three points.
