Comical defensive mix-up gives Inter 2-1 win over Botafogo

PORTO ALEGRE, Dec 12 (Reuters) - A comical mix up by Botafogo defenders gifted Internacional a 2-1 win and condemned the Rio de Janeiro side to their seventh consecutive league defeat on Saturday. With 22 minutes gone in the second half Botafogo right back Kevin nonchalantly passed a free kick back to his central defenders who were not paying attention and Yuri Alberto stole in to control the ball and slot it past the keeper. The referee, who was running away from play and had his back turned, at first appeared to chalk off the goal but after reviewing it on the pitch-side Video Assistant Referee allowed it to stand. The struggling Rio side had taken the lead through Pedro Raul in 28 minutes but the home club equalised six minutes later through Patrick. The defeat was a huge blow to the visitors, who have picked up just three points out of their last 36 and are now bottom of the Serie A table.Inter moved into fifth, nine points behind leaders Sao Paulo.
