PSG v Rennes
Kvaratskhelia brace leads PSG to rout of Rennes
Paris Saint-Germain returned to winning ways in Ligue 1 by thrashing 10-man Rennes 5-0 to remain a point behind leaders Lens.
Luis Enrique's side's defeat at Monaco last week saw them knocked off top spot, but they went ahead at the Parc des Princes through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia before Senny Mayulu gave PSG a 2-0 half-time lead.
Kvaratskhelia doubled his tally and, after Jérémy Jacquet was sent off for two bookings, long-range strikes late on from Ibrahim Mbaye and Gonçalo Ramos sealed an impressive victory for PSG in their last home match of the year.
PSG now need to win two of their remaining three fixtures in 2025 to achieve their goal of 50 triumphs in a calendar year, while Rennes' run of four straight victories came to an emphatic end.
They started brightly as Przemyslaw Frankowski fired over in the opening minute, but PSG gradually began to get on top without threatening much, with Vitinha and Bradley Barcola off target with their efforts.
Matvey Safonov got down low to keep out Esteban Lepaul's strike, which proved an important save as, moments later, PSG went ahead in the 28th minute through Kvaratskhelia's excellent solo goal.
The Georgian collected the ball from Lucas Hernández on the left and then cut inside and found a pocket of space on the edge of the area before drilling low beyond Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba.
Lepaul was once again denied by Safonov before the visitors doubled their lead after 39 minutes, Mayulu wrapping his foot round the ball from six yards and finding the net from Joao Neves' cutback.
Mayulu rattled the crossbar just after half-time, Samba had to be alert to keep out Kvaratskhelia's effort from distance, while Neves headed wide as PSG looked to put the contest to bed.
Barcola and substitute Ousmane Dembélé were also thwarted by Samba, who was beaten for a third time when Mayulu and Kvaratskhelia combined midway through the second half.
Barcola stopped the ball from going into touch and fed Mayulu, who pulled it back for an unmarked Kvaratskhelia to lash a first-time shot high into the net and all but secure victory.
To add insult to injury for Rennes, Jacquet was given his marching orders in the 74th minute after receiving a second booking before substitute Mbaye added PSG's fourth.
Mbaye received the ball from Quentin Ndjantou and was given time and space to pick his spot from 25 yards, unfurling a wonderful drive across Samba and into the top corner.
Ramos, who replaced Kvaratskhelia, added a fifth in added time by lashing in low past Samba from distance.
