Barnet claim vital victory over Newport

Goals either side of half-time from Shaquile Coulthirst and Ricardo Almeida Santos kept Barnet's League Two survival hopes alive as they beat Newport 2-0.The hosts took the lead in the 10th minute when Simeon Akinola played in Coulthirst, who finished from close range.Newport nearly equalised in the following minute with Matty Dolan's header rattling the crossbar while at the other end Dan Butler cleared Richard Brindley's shot off the line.The Barnet defender came close to doubling the lead again when his free-kick forced a good save from Joe Day.Day was called into action again before half-time to deny Akinola before John Akinde's header was cleared off the line by Ben White.Padraig Amond had the ball in the back of the net just before the hour mark but his goal was ruled out for offside.Santos found space to break forward from defence and his curling shot was saved by Day before he headed in from Ryan Watson's corner in the 81st minute to double Barnet's lead.

Alex Nicholls earns Barnet crucial victory

Alex Nicholls' goal just before half-time proved to be enough to give Barnet three precious points from a 1-0 win against Forest Green Rovers.In the opening minute Shaquile Coulthirst forced Bradley Collins into a good save and the rebound was deflected behind for a corner.At the other end, Dayle Grubb's shot was headed behind by Michael Nelson and Haydn Hollis headed the corner over from close range.Rovers keeper Collins was called into action again as David Tutonda found space on the edge of the area to shoot.The teams looked to be heading into the break level but Nicholls' low shot into the bottom corner put the home side ahead with virtually the last kick of the first half.In the 89th minute a looping cross was headed down by Christian Doidge towards the bottom corner but Craig Ross pulled off a good save to keep a clean sheet.The win lifts Barnet off the foot of the League Two table and keeps their faint hopes of staying in the Football League alive with four games to go.

Maamria off the mark at Stevenage with victory over Barnet

Dino Maamria claimed his first victory as Stevenage manager with a 4-1 win over relegation-threatened Barnet.Two goals apiece from Danny Newton and Alex Revell saw off the Bees, who remain bottom of Sky Bet League Two, five points from safety with as many games to go.Martin Allen's side started this local derby on top, with Ryan Watson's in-swinging corner hitting the crossbar after eight minutes.But the hosts improved as the half progressed and Newton broke the deadlock a minute before the interval, meeting Ben Kennedy's deep cross to head in his 14th of the season.His left-footed volley from 25 yards rebounded in off a post to double their advantage in the 62nd minute.January signing Revell sealed Boro's victory five minutes later when he beat Craig Ross with a low drive.Shaquile Coulthirst scored a fine solo consolation for the Bees, beating Tom King with a powerful shot into the bottom corner.Newton unselfishly played in Revell to score Boro's fourth after the duo beat the offside trap three minutes from time.

John Akinde brace boosts Barnet to victory

John Akinde scored two penalties either side of a Harry McKirdy goal to earn Barnet a 2-1 win against Crewe.Akinde put the hosts ahead from the penalty spot in the 51st minute but they were pegged back in the 71st minute when George Ray looped a header to the back post and McKirdy was able to steer it in.The match appeared to be heading for a draw but in the 87th minute the Bees won their second penalty of the match and Akinde made no mistake from the spot to revive Barnet's Sky Bet League Two survival hopes.Just before the first half drew to a close there was a goalmouth scramble, but the away side cleared the ball off the line and hacked it clear.In the second half James Jones fouled Simeon Akinola in the area to concede a penalty. Akinde fired it in low to break the deadlock.Paul Green would have equalised for Crewe but he was denied by Craig Ross' excellent save - minutes later the goalkeeper was beaten by McKirdy's effort from close range.Jean-Louis Akpa Akpro came agonisingly close to scoring as he struck the crossbar with a volley from the edge of the penalty box.Late on, Shaq Coulthirst was fouled in the area by Ray and Akinde netted his second penalty of the match.

Luton return to top of League Two with win over Barnet

Luton went back to the top of the League Two table after Danny Hylton and James Collins netted in a 2-0 win over Barnet.A poor first half saw Olly Lee's low shot parried behind by Bees keeper Craig Ross, who also punched clear Hylton's header and turned aside Luke Berry's curler from 25 yards.John Akinde's shot did not miss the bottom corner by much, but a minute after the break Town were ahead when Alan Sheehan's free-kick was met brilliantly by Dan Potts and Hylton headed in from a yard out.Luton threatened a second, Andrew Shinnie's blast deflected behind and Berry's curler tipped over by Ross, while Akinde's low effort was straight at James Shea.Town had their second after 68 minutes when Berry found Collins on the edge of the box and his angled volley went through Ross.Luton could have added to their tally. Lee's piledriver was turned over by Ross, who also finger-tipped Alan McCormack's 40-yard shot away, with Scott Cuthbert heading inches off target.Late on, Simeon Akinola's free-kick was brilliantly saved by Shea as Luton leapfrogged Accrington at the summit.

Barnet gave their League Two survival hopes a huge boost after they won 1-0 at Colchester United.Alex Nicholls' second-half strike proved enough to give the Bees three precious points at the Weston Homes Community Stadium, denting the U's play-off hopes.Ryan Watson fired wide for Barnet early on and Mikael Mandron went close for Colchester in similar fashion, before Nicholls wasted a gilt-edged chance for the visitors in the 19th minute, blazing over unmarked from 10 yards.Colchester twice came close to taking the lead late in the first half, with Brandon Comley's excellent 25-yard strike flashing inches wide of the upright and Barnet keeper George Legg alert enough to foil Courtney Senior in the area.Colchester changed their formation at the break in a bid to make a breakthrough but it was the Bees who scored the winner just after the hour mark through Nicholls, who controlled and fired low past Sam Walker from close range after John Akinde had picked him out in the penalty area.
