LOS ANGELES -- — Freshman Kanaan Carlyle came off the bench to score 17 points, sparking Stanford to a come-from-behind 59-53 victory over UCLA on Wednesday night.
Carlyle, the AP's reigning national player of the week, made 5 of 10 shots with three 3-pointers and 4 of 5 free throws for the Cardinal (7-6, 2-1 Pac-12 Conference). He added five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Reserve Andrej Stojakovic added nine points as the Cardinal bench outscored the UCLA substitutes 29-6.
Adem Bona scored the first four points in a 10-0 run for the Bruins (6-8, 1-2) to begin the game. Carlyle had a three-point play and Michael Jones followed with two free throws to pull the Cardinal within two points before Bona made two free throws with 2 seconds left to put the Bruins up 30-26 at halftime.
The Bruins, who made eight of their first nine shots, missed 25 of their next 31 and fell behind 42-36 on Carlyle's 3-pointer with 11:41 left to play. Berke Buyuktuncel answered with the Bruins' first 3-pointer on their seventh attempt, but Stojakovic and Brandon Angel had baskets to complete a 20-11 run and Stanford led 46-41 with 9:38 remaining.
Stanford took a 51-43 lead when Maxime Raynaud made the first of two free throws with 4:09 to go. The Cardinal maintained a two-possession lead from there. UCLA missed 22 of 25 shots before sinking their final two attempts — both from 3-point range where the Bruins missed 10 of 11 prior.
Freshman Sebastian Mack had 14 points to lead the Bruins. Buyuktuncel scored 13 and Bona finished with 12 points, nine rebounds and four blocks.
UCLA saw a four-game win streak against Stanford end. The Bruins lead 151-98 in a series that began in 1925. The Bruins began a new year with a losing record for the first time since the 2009-10 season.
Carlyle earned national accolades after he scored 28 points in Stanford's 100-82 victory over No. 4 Arizona on New Year's Eve. It was the most points scored by a Cardinal freshman since Chasson Randle scored 30 in a win over Arizona State in the 2012 Pac-12 Tournament.
