Iona pulls away late to earn a 71-69 win over rival Siena
NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- Schadrac Casimir scored 17points, including a key layup that pushed the lead to six points with just under two minutes remaining, and Iona knocked off Siena 71-69 in a Metro Atlantic battle of long-time rivals Thursday.
The game was the 111th meeting between the schools. Iona won for the 15th time in the last 18 games.
Deyshonee Much had a tip-on with 3:51 left to put Iona in the lead and knocked down a 3 to extend it to 67-62.
Casimir hit 6 of 13 from the field and was 3 of 6 from deep. Roland Griffin converted 9 of 10 from the line, grabbed eight rebounds and finished with 15 points. The Gaels (10-7, 4-1) were 22 of 57 from the field (38.76 percent), but knocked down 8 of 16 from distance.
Ashante Shivers and Jordan Horn scored 13 and 12 points, respectively, to lead Siena (5-13, 1-4).
