Standings
OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- It has been a successful season for the Oakland Athletics and a disappointing one for the Seattle Mariners. Both teams play their 162nd and final regular season contest this afternoon.
Seattle looked to end a one-year postseason drought, but brutal pitching once again did in the Mariners. They won for just the second time in six games Saturday with a 10-2 triumph over the Athletics. David Bell went 2-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to 11 games. Oakland has lost seven of its last nine outings. Ron Mahay (1-0, 1.88 ERA) makes his first major league start for the A's. In five relief appearances this season, Mahay has allowed just three runs and five hits over 14 1/3 innings. Mahay has only pitched one-third of an inning against the Mariners in his career. John Halama (11-9, 4.29) looks to snap out of a slump for Seattle. He is 0-4 over his last five starts and was pounded for six runs and eight hits over four innings Tuesday against Texas. Halama has not won since August 31 against the Chicago White Sox. Halama held the A's to one run and eight hits over nine innings, but did not get a decision in the 2-1 victory on June 29. He also has three relief appearances, yielding one run and four hits over 3 2/3 innings.
