Newton puts up 25 points as Wolves outlast Herd

The Iowa Wolves survived the Wisconsin Herd 110-108 after leading by as many as 18 points in the first half Tuesday night. The Wolves secured a split of the two-game series at Oshkosh Arena after falling to the Herd on Sunday.

Tristen Newton led the way for Iowa (8-6), finishing with 25 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Jules Bernard posted 22 points and six rebounds, while Joan Beringer was a force in the paint, recording 17 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Enrique Freeman contributed 13 points and seven rebounds, and Nate Santos added 12 points. The Wolves were efficient from the free throw line, making 20 of 27 attempts.

Wisconsin (4-10) was paced by Mark Sears, who scored a team-high 24 points and was instrumental in the team's second-half surge. The Herd received significant contributions from their bench, as Kira Lewis Jr. scored 15 points, Cormac Ryan added 14 points and Dennis Smith Jr. chipped in with 11 points, five assists and five steals. Stephen Thompson finished with 14 points, and fellow starter John Butler Jr. grabbed eight rebounds to go with six points and two blocks.

Iowa established a 32-18 lead after the first quarter. However, the Herd mounted a significant comeback, outscoring the Wolves 34-26 in the second quarter to cut the deficit to six at halftime. The outcome was decided in the final minute, when key free throws from Newton and two critical offensive rebounds by Iowa off missed free throws helped seal the victory.

Up next: The Wolves will face the Birmingham Squadron on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET during the G League Winter Showcase in Orlando, Florida, while the Herd will meet the South Bay Lakers in the tournament on Sunday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
