Akinjo's 31 points lead Grand Rapids Gold in comeback win over Motor City Cruise
The Grand Rapids Gold defeated the Motor City Cruise 123-114 on Tuesday night at Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit, outscoring the Cruise 40-20 in the fourth quarter to overcome a deficit they faced for most of the game.
James Akinjo powered the comeback for the Gold (3-2), scoring 31 points, including several baskets in the final minutes, while also dishing out nine assists. Javante McCoy added 24 points against his former team. Kessler Edwards contributed 16 points and six rebounds, and Dane Goodwin had 13 points and eight rebounds. Moses Brown and Coleman Hawkins scored 12 points apiece.
The loss spoiled a career night for Motor City Cruise guard Jaden Akins, who scored a game-high 33 points on 11-for-18 shooting. Akins was particularly effective from long range, making 7 of 8 3-point attempts. Quincy Olivari recorded a double-double for the Cruise (2-3) with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 7 assists. Tolu Smith posted 15 points and nine rebounds, and Brice Williams added 16 points.
Motor City led from the first quarter, building a lead as large as 12 points before the Gold took the lead with four minutes remaining. Despite shooting an efficient 18-for-32 (56.3%) from beyond the arc, the Cruise were undone by turnovers. Motor City committed 22 turnovers. The Gold capitalized on these mistakes, committing only six turnovers themselves.
