Will Riley scores 33, Go-Go set franchise steal record in win over Cruise
Will Riley scored a game-high 33 points to lead the Capital City Go-Go to a 112-104 victory over the Motor City Cruise on Wednesday night at CareFirst Arena in Washington, D.C. The Go-Go established a franchise record with 19 steals, fueling a 44-9 advantage in points off turnovers.
Riley, on assignment from the Washington Wizards, scored 24 of his points in the second half to help Capital City (4-2) fend off a rally from the Cruise. He finished 10-for-21 from the field and added three rebounds. Skal Labissiere was a force on both ends, contributing 23 points on 7-for-12 shooting, 9 rebounds and 4 blocks. The defensive effort was spearheaded by Jamir Watkins, who recorded 7 steals to go with his 12 points and 5 rebounds. Leaky Black filled the stat sheet with 9 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals, while Damari Monsanto provided 15 points off the bench, all from beyond the arc, where he shot 5-for-14.
Jaden Akins led the effort for the Cruise (2-6) with a 32-point performance, shooting 14-for-29 while also collecting 4 rebounds and 5 steals. John Ukomadu scored 22 points, grabbed nine rebounds and connected on five of his eight 3-point attempts. Matthew Moncrieffe had a double-double of 16 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. Isaac Jones also reached double figures with 15 points.
The Go-Go built a 16-point lead in the first half, but the Cruise battled back, outscoring Capital City 33-20 in the third quarter to cut the deficit to just one point entering the final period. However, Riley's performance combined with the Go-Go's persistent defense was the difference.
