Jones Garcia's 34 points lead Spurs past Stars 118-113
The Austin Spurs beat the host Salt Lake City Stars 118-113 on Tuesday night at the Maverik Center West Valley City. David Jones Garcia scored a game-high 34 points and added eight assists to lead Austin to the victory in a tightly contested game.
Kyle Mangas added 25 points for the Spurs (4-4), including four 3-pointers, and went 7-for-8 from the free throw line. Harrison Ingram recorded a double-double with 14 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. Off the bench, Jayden Nunn was efficient, scoring 17 points on 6-for-8 shooting. Elfrid Payton orchestrated the offense with five assists while also grabbing eight rebounds, and James Banks III anchored the defense with three blocks and seven boards.
The Salt Lake City Stars (4-5) were led by a dominant performance on the glass from Oscar Tshiebwe, who finished with 13 points and a game-high 20 rebounds, nine of which were on the offensive end. John Tonje also posted a double-double, leading the Stars in scoring with 27 points to go along with 11 rebounds. Salt Lake City received key contributions from its backcourt as well. Justin Harmon scored 13 points and dished out a team-high eight assists. Matthew Murrell added 18 points, including three 3-pointers, while Max Klesmit chipped in 14 points off the bench.
The game remained close throughout, with the Spurs taking a 90-87 lead into the final quarter. Austin outscored Salt Lake City 28-26 in the fourth period to secure the five-point win. The Spurs recorded nine blocks and 12 steals as a team, which helped offset a 54-40 rebounding disadvantage.
