Cruise hold off Gold comeback for 125-114 victory
The Motor City Cruise defeated the Grand Rapids Gold 125-114 on Thursday night at Wayne State Fieldhouse in Detroit. The Cruise built a commanding second-half lead before withstanding a furious rally from the Gold to secure their fourth consecutive victory.
Eight players scored in double figures for Motor City (6-7). Chaz Lanier led the way with 21 points, including five 3-pointers. Drew Peterson contributed 17 points, five rebounds and four assists in his home debut, while Bobi Klintman and Jaden Akins each scored 13 points. Klintman grabbed eight rebounds and Akins dished out five assists. Tolu Smith, Isaac Jones and Wendell Moore Jr. each chipped in 12 points. John Ukomadu scored 11 off the bench.
Dane Goodwin and Javante McCoy had 22 points apiece for Grand Rapids (5-9). Goodwin scored 13 points in the third quarter to fuel the Gold's comeback attempt. Kessler Edwards finished with 21 points and three rebounds, Curtis Jones nearly recorded a triple-double with 15 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds and center Moses added 18 points and eight boards.
The Cruise led by as many as 22 points in the third quarter before the Gold rallied, using a 28-9 run to cut the deficit to 86-83 after a bucket by Jones with 1:36 left in the period. However, an 8-3 surge allowed Motor City to seize an 94-86 advantage heading into the fourth.
Motor City outscored Grand Rapids 31-28 in the fourth to avenge a late December loss.
