Gold erase 22-point deficit, stun Celtics in overtime
The Grand Rapids Gold overcame a 22-point deficit to defeat the Maine Celtics 122-119 in a target score overtime Thursday night at the Portland Expo Building, with Kessler Edwards scoring the game-winning layup in the untimed period to cap a comeback for the visitors.
Dane Goodwin was instrumental for the Gold (6-9), scoring 25 points, grabbing 12 rebounds and hitting a 3-pointer with 3.6 seconds left in regulation to force the extra period. Javante McCoy provided a spark off the bench with 25 points and eight assists, scoring 10 points in the fourth quarter. Moses Brown posted 18 points and nine rebounds despite foul trouble, and Edwards finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Terrence Hargrove Jr. and Curtis Jones added 16 points apiece, with Jones also dishing out eight assists.
Ron Harper Jr. led all scorers with a game-high 37 points for the Celtics (9-7), connecting on seven 3-pointers and adding five rebounds and four assists. Four other Celtics scored in double figures, with Aaron Scott and Jalen Bridges each contributing 16 points. Bridges also had nine rebounds. Kendall Brown had 15 points, five rebounds and a game-high six steals, and Max Shulga added 14 points and eight assists.
Maine appeared to be in control for much of the contest, building a 69-52 halftime lead and extending it to as many as 22 points in the third quarter. Grand Rapids mounted its comeback in the fourth, outscoring Maine 37-23. Goodwin's corner 3 tied the game at 114.
In the target score overtime, with the first team to seven points declared the winner, Grand Rapids jumped out to a 120-114 lead. Maine battled back with a 3 from Shulga, and a putback dunk from Bridges cut the deficit to 120-119. After several defensive stops by both teams, Edwards secured the victory for the Gold with a layup.
Up next: The Celtics host the Westchester Knicks on Saturday at 1 p.m. ET, and the Gold visit the Long Island Nets on Monday at 7 p.m.
