Vipers' Nix scores 44, hits winning layup in OT win over Legends

Daishen Nix scored the winning layup in overtime to cap a 44-point performance, leading the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to a 121-120 road victory over the Texas Legends on Thursday night. Nix scored all seven of the Vipers' points in the overtime period.

For the Vipers (13-6), Isaiah Crawford had 23 points and 13 rebounds, while Tyler Smith added 21 points and seven rebounds. Cameron Matthews, who finished with 10 points and five assists, sent the game to overtime by hitting a corner 3-pointer with 1.1 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the score at 114.

Miles Kelly led the Legends (6-15) with 31 points, connecting on seven 3-pointers. Ryan Nembhard orchestrated the offense, finishing with a double-double of 16 points and 17 assists. The Legends also got double-doubles from Jeremiah Robinson-Earl, who posted 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Moussa Cisse, who had 15 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks. Mark Armstrong added 17 points off the bench.

Texas controlled the game early, building a 65-54 lead by halftime. However, the Vipers stormed back in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to one point entering the final frame. The fourth quarter featured a frantic finish, highlighted by a 3-pointer from Nix while being fouled with 36 seconds left, which led to a four-point play and cut the Legends' lead to two. After a free throw from Cisse put Texas up by three, Matthews hit the tying shot to force the extra period. In overtime, Nix took over, scoring all seven points for Rio Grande Valley to reach the target score.

Up next: The Vipers visit the Sioux Falls Skyforce on Feb. 19, while the Legends host the South Bay Lakers on Feb. 20.
