Jones' free throws with 1 second left lift Gold over Nets 119-116
Curtis Jones made three free throws with one second remaining to give the Grand Rapids Gold a thrilling 119-116 victory over the Long Island Nets on Thursday night at Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in New York.
Jones led the Gold (8-16) with a double-double, scoring 25 points and dishing out 13 assists. Dane Goodwin and Moses Brown each scored 24 points. Goodwin hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 11 seconds left, while Brown recorded a double-double by pulling down 13 rebounds. The Gold received contributions from Terrence Hargrove Jr., who scored 13 points off the bench, and Ben Coupet Jr., who added 12 points. Coleman Hawkins had 10 assists to go along with his nine points.
For the Nets (15-11), Chaney Johnson scored a career-high 29 points on 10-of-12 shooting and added seven rebounds in the loss. Ben Saraf contributed 21 points, while Malachi Smith posted a double-double with 18 points and 13 assists. Smith, however, committed a crucial turnover with 16 seconds left that led directly to Goodwin's late 3-pointer. Tyson Etienne also scored 18 points, and Grant Nelson finished with 17.
The game was a back-and-forth affair that featured eight ties and six lead changes. After the Nets built an 11-point lead at the start of the second quarter, the Gold stormed back in the second half, at one point hitting six consecutive 3-pointers to reclaim the lead. After Johnson tied the score at 116 with five seconds to play, Jones was fouled by Nelson on a 3-point attempt on the ensuing possession. He calmly sank all three free throws to secure the win. Etienne's potential tying shot was unsuccessful.
