John Tonje scores 42 as Maine Celtics top Osceola Magic
John Tonje scored a game-high 42 points, including eight 3-pointers, to lead the visiting Maine Celtics to a 119-112 wire-to-wire victory over the Osceola Magic on Tuesday at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Florida.
The Celtics, who never trailed, received a major boost from their bench. Hank Morgan was nearly perfect, scoring 22 points on 8-for-9 shooting, including making 6 of his 7 3-point attempts. Hason Ward added 14 points on a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, and Kendall Brown contributed 13 points and eight rebounds. The victory moved the Celtics (14-16) closer to a playoff spot, avenging a blowout loss to the Magic just two days earlier.
Osceola (19-8) was co-led by Lester Quinones and Justin Minaya, who each scored 24 points. Quinones added seven rebounds and six assists, while Minaya tallied four steals. Alex Morales recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Colin Castleton chipped in with eight points and 11 rebounds.
Maine controlled the game from the outset, building a lead that grew to as many as 18 points in the third quarter. The Magic mounted a furious comeback late in the fourth, cutting the deficit to five points after a Minaya 3-pointer with 29 seconds remaining. Following a successful coach's challenge that gave them possession, Osceola had two opportunities to get closer, but 3-point attempts by Quinones and Javonte Smart were off the mark, allowing the Celtics to seal the win at the free throw line.
Up next: The Magic host the Wisconsin Herd on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET. The Celtics host the Grand Rapids Gold on Friday at 7 p.m. ET.
