Newton's career-high 43 points lead Vipers past Blue
Tristen Newton scored a career-high 43 points to lead the Rio Grande Valley Vipers to a 120-105 victory over the host Oklahoma City Blue on Tuesday night at Paycom Center.
Newton shot 13-for-24 from the field, including eight 3-pointers. Daishen Nix contributed 20 points, seven assists and six rebounds. Caleb McConnell added 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench, and Efe Abogidi scored 15 points and Chase Jeter posted 10 points with eight rebounds.
Zhaire Smith led the Blue with 19 points. Marquis Barnett came off the bench to score a career-high 16 points and grab seven rebounds. Nikola Topic finished with 14 points and a team-high eight assists, and Kyle Rose also scored 14 points, matching a career high with four 3-pointers. Kendall Munson pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds.
The Vipers (22-12) capitalized on the Blue's mistakes all night, turning 29 turnovers into 36 points. Rio Grande Valley, which is headed to the playoffs, built a lead as large as 27 points in the second half. Oklahoma City (12-22) was dealt a blow in the second quarter when forward Brooks Barnhizer had to leave the game after taking an inadvertent elbow from a teammate that resulted in a lost tooth. The Blue trailed by 22 points entering the fourth quarter and never got within 12.
