Carter's game winner sends Kings past Spurs 119-117 in OT

Devin Carter scored the game-winning layup in overtime to lift the Stockton Kings to a 119-117 victory over the Austin Spurs on Friday in the opening quarterfinal of the NBA G League Winter Showcase in Orlando. The Kings advanced to the semifinals after squandering a 22-point lead and needing the extra period to secure the win.

Carter, on assignment from the Sacramento Kings, finished with a team-high 25 points, adding 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 5 steals. Daeqwon Plowden and DaQuan Jeffries each contributed 22 points for Stockton (1-0), with Plowden grabbing nine rebounds and Jeffries hitting five 3-pointers, including a crucial one in overtime that gave the Kings a 117-116 lead. Isaiah Stevens orchestrated the offense with 13 points and nine assists, while Dexter Dennis added 15 points.

The Spurs (0-1) mounted a furious comeback led by Stanley Umude, who scored a game-high 34 points. Umude forced overtime by drawing a foul on a 3-point attempt with 7.9 seconds left in regulation and sinking all three free throws to tie the game at 112. His effort erased a deficit that had grown to as large as 22 points in the first half.

David Jones Garcia erupted for 31 points for Austin, scoring 27 of them after halftime, including a remarkable sequence of back-to-back four-point plays in the third quarter that fueled the comeback. Micah Potter posted a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Harrison Ingram added 11 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.

The overtime period was played to a target score of 119. After Jeffries' 3-pointer put Stockton ahead, Austin tied the game at 117 on a free throw from Jones Garcia. On the final possession, Carter drove to the basket and laid the ball in to end the thriller and send the defending G League champions to the next round.
