Chaz Lanier's buzzer-beater lifts Motor City past College Park
Chaz Lanier made a driving layup as time expired to give the Motor City Cruise a 113-112 victory over the College Park Skyhawks on Monday at the NBA G League Winter Showcase in Orlando, Florida. The game-winning basket was the 12th and final lead change of a dramatic second half that saw both teams trade clutch shots down the stretch.
The Cruise (1-1) were powered by a dominant performance from their bench, led by Bobi Klintman who scored a game-high 26 points. Klintman was lethal from deep, hitting 6 of 10 3-pointers, and added nine rebounds and four steals.
Inside, Tolu Smith recorded a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds, including 10 on the offensive glass. Wendell Moore Jr. facilitated the offense with 10 points, seven rebounds, and five assists, while Lanier finished with 11 points, none more important than his final two.
College Park (1-1) erased a 16-point first-half deficit to take the lead in the fourth quarter. Javan Johnson and Caleb Houstan each scored 19 points for the Skyhawks. Johnson, who shot 5-for-8 from 3-point range, momentarily played the hero by sinking two free throws with 2.1 seconds left to give College Park a 112-111 advantage. Center Malik Williams posted a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Deivon Smith contributed a versatile line of 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, and MJ Walker added 12 points in the narrow loss.
After Johnson's free throws, Motor City inbounded the ball to Lanier, who drove the length of the court and finished off the glass as the horn sounded. The play was confirmed by a video review, securing the win for the Cruise.
