Panthers coach Ron Rivera says ideally he would like to get three to four series out of quarterback Cam Newton on Thursday at New England. Newton hasn't played in the first two preseason games. Kyle Allen will be up second.

Panthers' camp observations: 1. The team held its first practice in the new indoor facility to beat the extreme heat and not rain that got owner David Tepper to fast-forward the project; 2. QB Cam Newton has done only one interview since camp opened but he did stop to tell reporters today's news flash, his son Chosen started pre-K today and ‘'look where I'm at;'' 3. Graham Gano won't kick again this week because of a sore knee but the plan is to have him kick next week to see where things stand. Meanwhile, Joey Slye has two 50-plus yard field goals in the first two games.

Panthers running back Jordan Scarlett is trying to beat out Cameron Artis-Payne to backup Christian McCaffrey, but he still has to carry Artis-Payne's pads after practice as one of his rookie duties. Scarlett looked good in his preseason debut last Friday and coach Ron Rivera wants to get the former Florida standout some reps with the first team on Thursday at New England to see what he can do.

The Panthers haven't played quarterback Cam Newton, running back Christian McCaffrey or middle linebacker Luke Kuechly in the first two preseason games. The plan as of Monday is to play them and the rest of the starters in Thursday's game at New England, a team coach Ron Rivera calls the “gold standard'' in the NFL. “They've been the gold standard for a long time,'' Rivera said. “You want to go out and see just how good you are. It is a good measuring stick as to who we can be as a football team.''

The Panthers made a couple of bottom of the roster moves, placing guard Norman Price and linebacker Jonathan Celestin on injured reserve and signing guard Tyler Catalina and linebacker Brandon Bell. Catalina and Bell came into the league as undrafted players in 2017.

Panthers' camp observations: 1. Safety Tre Boston got fully into trash talking with quarterback Cam Newton after James Bradberry had his second interception. Newton finally shut Boston up with a deep touchdown pass to Aldrick Robinson. "The biggest thing we've got to remember is the Panthers aren't on the Panthers' schedule,'' coach Ron Rivera said of all the in-house chirping.; 2. Tight end Ian Thomas returned to practice after missing the past week with bruised ribs suffered in the first preseason game; 3.The Wofford College portion of camp is over so Sunday's session was the first at the re-designed practice facility with an indoor bubble, which wasn't used on this hot, muggy day. That'll happen Monday;

After reviewing film of Friday night's loss to Buffalo, Panthers coach Ron Rivera's biggest issue with quarterbacks Kyle Allen and Will Grier wasn't bad decisions but bad throws. So the backup job remains a tossup. Rivera also said Taylor Heinicke had a good game but on Sunday last year's backup to Cam Newton remained fourth on the depth chart.

Panthers' new indoor practice facility ready for the season. Just not today as the team résumes practice following Friday's loss to Buffalo. Outdoors still an integral part of getting in game shape.

Reid rips Jay-Z over Kap remarks, deal with NFL

Panthers safety Eric Reid continued to be critical of Jay-Z on Friday, saying it was "asinine" of him to say "we've moved past kneeling" and calling his partnership with the NFL a "money move."

Panthers safety Eric Reid responded to comments by ESPN's Stephen A Smith, who criticized him for lashing out at Jay-Z ‘s partnership with the NFL and saying it was burying Colin Kaepernick's career. ‘'The order of events that happened right? We're professional athletes first, then we started protesting systemic oppression,'' Reid said. ‘'I think it's ludicrous that somebody like Stephen A,, who has been so closely reporting on this, would make a statement like that is asinine."

Panthers coach Ron Rivera said "decision making'' was what he'll look at first when deciding between Kyle Allen and Will Grier and Cam Newton's backup. He was surprised both struggled in Friday night's exhibition loss to Buffalo after two good practices against the Bills on Tuesday and Wednesday. "The part about it was the decisions that it looked like they made, were good decisions,'' Rivera said. "They just didn't deliver good balls.''

Panthers safety Eric Reid is wearing a black No.7 Colin Kaepernick jersey. Says Jay Z prospects of being a part owner of an NF@ team is ‘'kind of despicable.''

Time to give Taylor Heinicke some serious snaps in this backup quarterback contest? So far in the fourth quarter he's 8-for-11 for 78 yards and a touchdown. First up last season when Cam Newton was shut down, Heinicke has been reduced to basically a scout team quarterback during most practices while Kyle Allen and Will Grier battle it out. Don't forget Heinicke has the most experience in Norv Turner's offense, having been with him at Minnesota.

Will Grier gets his first snaps in from of his hometown crowd at Bank of America Stadium. He has a chance to impress after Kyle Allen went 4-for-11 for 32 yards with two passes deflected at the line of scrimmage. So what does he do? Throws an interception that is returned 71 yards for a touchdown.

Not a great start for Kyle Allen with the first-team offense (minus TE Greg Olsen) in the race for the backup quarterback job. He short-hopped a second-down pass and had his third-down pass tipped at the line. Allen has been consistent most of the preseason, which is why he got the start over Will Grier.

In first look at Panthers' starting defense -- minus ILBs Luke Kuechly and Shaq Thompson -- in an exhibition game this preseason there was decent pressure at times but Buffalo was able to move efficiently mostly with short passes to the 12 for a field goal. No gaping mistakes, though, and the unit will be more efficient with Kuechly and Thompson.

Fans get to see Panthers quarterback Cam Newton warm up in uniform, but he won't play. Neither will Christian McCaffrey, Luke Kuechly, Greg Olsen and Shaq Thompson. Coach Ron Rivera apparently not risking his stars to injury in the first two preseason games.

First-round pick Brian Burns (ankle) moving around pretty good during warmups with the defensive line. He was held out of Wednesday's joint practice against Buffalo after tweaking the ankle during Tuesday's practice. He had two sacks in his preseason debut last week at Chicago.

David Newton ESPN Staff Writer

Cam Newton is not expected to play in tonight's exhibition game against Buffalo, so the Panthers attention turns to backups Kyle Allen and Will Grier. Team is taking no chances with Newton. He got good work in joint practices against Buffalo on Tuesday and Wednesday.
