Slocum leads No. 9 Oregon State to 86-39 rout of Washington

SEATTLE -- Not that there's been many of them, but after each of Oregon State's three setbacks this season Scott Rueck has received the kind of response he expected.

The latest example was one of the most impressive performances of the season by the ninth-ranked Beavers.

Destiny Slocum scored 17 of her 28 points in the second quarter, Aleah Goodman made four of Oregon State's six 3-pointers in the first quarter, and the Beavers rebounded from their first loss in conference play with an 86-39 win over Washington on Friday night.

"You can really make some growth and with this group that's the case. You don't want to lose but there is always a silver lining if you handle it correctly and this team did," Rueck said. "Just like when we got beat by (Texas) A&M earlier this year I thought we really made strides after that. We had some things were we really had to grow up this week."

The Beavers (16-3, 6-1 Pac-12) didn't let last Sunday's double overtime loss at home to Arizona State linger, matching a season-high with 30 first-quarter points and leading by as many as 22 in the opening 10 minutes. Goodman was the spark to Oregon State's big start, hitting all four of her attempts from deep, including a desperation heave under pressure as the first quarter clock expired.

The blowout was just beginning. The Beavers led 56-17 at halftime after shooting 62 percent. The 56 points were a season high for the first 20 minutes.

"I thought our focus defensively was phenomenal from the beginning. It led to transition, which led to easy baskets and then once you're getting stops that 3-point line opened up for us," Rueck said.

Oregon State had its seven-game win streak snapped in the loss to Arizona State and Slocum struggled in the loss hitting just 4 of 16 shots. She rebounded in the big way against the Huskies, but perhaps it should have been expected after scoring a career-high 30 against Washington.

Slocum had a scoreless first quarter on Friday before taking over at the offensive end.

"That's how unique we are. So many people, you can take one person away but you can't take the other four," Slocum said. "I think we're such a hard team to guard and when we're flowing on all cylinders defensively and offensively it makes us a nightmare.

Mikayla Pivec had 12 points and a career-high 19 rebounds for the Beavers. Joanna Grymek had 14 points and Goodman finished with 12.

Amber Melgoza led Washington (8-12, 1-7) with 20 points, but the Huskies dropped their fourth straight and have lost nine of 10.

Washington gave Oregon State trouble when the teams met in Corvallis earlier this month with the Beavers winning by 11. But Oregon State's hot shooting in the first quarter, combined with Washington being unable to hit anything from the perimeter led to the game getting out of hand early.

Washington missed its first 12 3-point attempts and shot 20 percent in the first half. The 17-point first half was the lowest for any half this season by the Huskies.

"It's another game where our offense dictates our defensive energy, and when we aren't making our shots, we're not interested in playing any (defense). Simple as that," Washington coach Jody Wynn said. "Credit them, they moved the ball beautifully, found the open shooters and knocked them down."

RECORD WATCH

Pivec is listed at 5-foot-10 but had one of the best rebounding games in Oregon State history. Pivec's 19 rebounds were one off the school record of 20 held by five different players. Pivec has been Oregon State's leading rebounder this season at 8.7 per game and her previous high was 15.

BIG PICTURE

Oregon State: Despite the first quarter barrage of 3-pointers, the Beavers finished just 10 of 29 on 3-pointers. The Beavers did make 10 or more 3s for the 11th time this season. Oregon State is 10-1 in those games.

Washington: For the second time in four games, the Huskies shot under 20 percent on 3-pointers. Washington was 4 of 33 on 3s after making 13 of 23 attempts from deep last Sunday in its loss at California.
