Will Bruin hits two to help the Seattle Sounders edge the Colorado Rapids
Colorado 1-2 Seattle: Bruin's double
Will Bruin led the way for Seattle Sounders at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in their win over Colorado Rapids.
Will Bruin scored twice as the Seattle Sounders defeated the host Colorado Rapids 2-1 Wednesday night at Dick's Sporting Goods Park.
The Sounders won for just the second time on the road this season and moved into a 10th-place tie in the Western Conference with the Rapids, who had their three-match unbeaten streak snapped.
Bruin broke a 1-1 tie in the 59th minute, assisted by Victor Rodriguez and Nicolas Lodeiro.
Colorado goalkeeper Tim Howard's clearance pass up the middle of the field was deflected by Seattle and to Lodeiro at the top of the 18-yard box. His back pass found an open Rodriguez, who chipped a cross to Bruin. The forward controlled the ball and beat Howard from about eight yards out. It was Bruin's team-leading fifth goal of the season.
Bruin opened the scoring in the 19th minute. Rodriguez's pass deflected off a Colorado defender and straight to Bruin, who was behind the defense. His left-footed shot from adjacent to the penalty spot found the bottom left corner of the net past a diving Howard.
Colorado tied the score at 1-1 in the 40th minute as Sam Nicholson got his first goal since being acquired May 2 in a trade with Minnesota United.
A through pass for Dominique Badji ended in Badji colliding with Seattle defender Jordan McCrary. The ball continued through for Edgar Castillo running down the left wing. Castillo's cross found Nicholson at the top of the six-yard box, and he soared over defender Waylon Francis, the glancing header making its way just inside the right post.
Goalkeeper Stefan Frei returned after missing the Sounders' 3-2 home loss Saturday to rival Portland with a concussion. He made four saves, including an outstanding stop in the 82nd minute that helped preserve the victory.
The Rapids' Shkelzen Gashi took a cross-field pass from Nicholson about 15 yards out and had an open right side of the net. But Frei scampered across the goalmouth and made a diving, left-handed save on Gashi's shot, deflecting it out of bounds.
