New England Revolution's unbeaten run at five games after draw with San Jose Earthquakes
San Jose 2-2 New England: Revs unbeaten run continues
New England's unbeaten run improves to five matches as they secured a point in a 2-2 draw with San Jose.
Diego Fagundez and Cristian Penilla scored for New England as the Revolution extended its unbeaten streak to five matches with a 2-2 draw at the San Jose Earthquakes on Wednesday night.
Penilla's goal was his sixth of the season and Fagundez's his fifth. New England moved to 1-0-4 since its last setback May 19 against the Columbus Crew.
Danny Hoesen netted his team-leading eighth and ninth goals for San Jose, which avoided its first five-match losing streak in MLS play since 2009.
Revolution goalkeeper Matt Turner recorded three saves. Earthquakes keeper Andrew Tarbell made five stops.
San Jose struck first in the 17th minute after a New England turnover. Turner tried to roll the ball out to Kelyn Rowe, but Earthquakes midfielder Florian Jungwirth's sliding tackle knocked the ball over to Hoesen. Revs defender Jalil Anibaba couldn't close the gap in time as a charging Hoesen struck a left-footed shot past a diving Turner.
Fagundez tied it in the 31st minute, elevating his free kick over the wall and past a leaping Tarbell into the top left corner of the net. San Jose defender Yefferson Quintana's foul of forward Krisztian Nemeth led to the free kick.
Penilla put the Revolution ahead 2-1 in the 43rd minute, taking a midfield pass from Fagundez and splitting two defenders in the penalty area before rocketing his right-footer past Tarbell into the top right corner.
Hoesen equalized for San Jose in the 51st minute, heading defender Nick Lima's cross past Turner into the bottom left corner.
Revolution midfielder Isaac Angking (illness) missed the match. Earthquakes defenders Shea Salinas (hamstring) and Joel Qviberg (knee) also sat out due to injuries. San Jose defender Kevin Partida (red card) and Revs defender Claude Dielna (yellow-card accumulation) were out with suspensions.
With group play in the World Cup starting Thursday, both teams will take a break from MLS play. San Jose is off until June 23 when it visits Real Salt Lake. New England returns to the pitch June 30 to host D.C. United.
