FC Dallas downs Montreal Impact to stay undefeated at home
Jesse Gonzalez had four saves to record his second shutout of the season and FC Dallas moved into a tie for first place in the Western Conference with a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday night at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
It was the 18th career shutout for Gonzalez who was making his 50th career MLS start. The victory extended FC Dallas' winning streak to four games and unbeaten streak to seven games. The Lobos remained undefeated at home and now have 29 points for the season, equaling Sporting Kansas City, who drew 0-0 on Saturday night at Portland.
Mauro Diaz scored his second goal of the season on a first-half penalty kick. The Lobos also tallied on an own-goal by Impact forward Matteo Mancosu.
Evan Bush had six saves for Montreal, which fell into 10th place in the Eastern Conference, three points ahead of last place D.C. United who lost 2-1 later on Saturday night in Seattle.
FC Dallas took a 1-0 lead just five minutes into the contest on the own-goal by Mancosu. Diaz curled a set-piece pass from about five yards outside the penalty box into a crowd, where Montreal defender Rudy Camacho headed the ball off the back of Mancosu's head and into the open net. The play was originally ruled offside, but the goal was ruled good after the video assistant referee showed that no FC Dallas player had touched the ball inside the box.
Forward Maxi Urruti, making his 100th MLS career start, drew a foul from Camacho in the penalty area to set the stage for a penalty kick by Diaz. The 27-year forward from Argentina converted with a kick just inside the left post and past the fingertips of a diving Bush to make it 2-0 in the 18th minute.
The Impact, who lost for the fifth time in their last six games, have allowed an MLS-worst 31 goals this season.
FC Dallas improved to 4-0-0 all-time against Montreal at home and also extended their home unbeaten streak to 15 games.
