Minnesota United cap five-game road trip with win over New York Red Bulls
Romario Ibarra scored the winning goal in the 50th minute, and Minnesota United ended a season-opening, five-game road trip by holding on for a 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday night in Harrison, N.J.
Ibarra lifted a spinning left-footed shot from close range past the diving attempt of New York goalkeeper Luis Robles to give Minnesota a 2-0 lead.
The Red Bulls, who took 1-0 shutout losses in their previous two games to Orlando City and Chicago, broke through in the 70th minute when Cristian Casseres Jr. scored his first career MLS goal.
Casseres scored after Tim Parker's header was stopped by Minnesota goalkeeper Vito Mannone. Mannone was unable to control the rebound, and Casseres swept it into the net for New York's first goal since the 89th minute of a 4-1 win over San Jose on March 16.
Abu Danladi scored the other goal in the 34th minute, and Angelo Rodriguez helped set up both goals for Minnesota (3-2-0, 9 points). United rebounded from a 2-1 loss last week at New England.
Mannone made five saves for Minnesota United, including a diving stop on a free kick by Alejandro Romero Gamarra in the 57th minute.
Minnesota concluded its trip on a night when leading scorer Darwin Quintero sat out due to a groin injury after being listed as questionable for the game.
The Red Bulls (1-3-1, 4 points) lost their third straight game and were unable to get their 100th regular-season win at Red Bull Arena on a night when they outshot Minnesota 13-9 and controlled possession for 63 percent of the match.
Minnesota scored the game's first goal when Danladi swept a soft right-footed shot past Robles from close range after Rodriguez chipped the ball to Romain Metanire.
Robles made three saves and lost his third consecutive game.
Minnesota United will open the new Allianz Field in Saint Paul on April 13 against New York City FC.
