Austin FC rout Timbers for first home win

Jon Gallagher, Diego Fagundez, Alex Ring and Hector Jimenez netted goals as the home-scoring floodgates finally opened for expansion Austin FC in a 4-1 victory over the Portland Timbers on Thursday.

The four goals were the most Austin FC has scored in any one game in its inaugural season. Austin had just six goals in its first 11 matches, and each of the two home games before Thursday were scoreless draws.

Austin (3-5-4, 13 points) hadn't won since May 1 at Minnesota United, going 0-4-4 since that victory. Portland (4-6-1, 13 points) have lost two consecutive matches and have a win, a draw and two losses since returning from the three-week international break that ended June 19.

Gallagher put himself in the record books with the first-ever home goal for Austin FC in the 28th minute. He took a dead-perfect, give-and-go pass from Tomas Pochettino on his left foot and sent the ball into the bottom left corner of the net to give Austin a 1-0 lead.

Austin FC added to its advantage just five minutes later, with Fagundez -- who scored the team's first-ever goal at Colorado on April 24 -- blasting a right-footed shot past Portland goalkeeper Steve Clark low to the right side. Cecilio Dominguez had the assist on the tally.

The Timbers pulled within a goal seven minutes into first-half stoppage time and changed the dynamic of the match.

Marvin Loria carried to ball all the way down the right side and turned briefly before sending a centering pass to the trailing Jeremy Ebobisse deep in the box. Ebobisse made short work of the opportunity, finding the center of the goal past Austin goalie Brad Stuver from close range.

Austin added to its lead with a goal from its captain, Ring, in the 77th minute. Ring headed home a set-piece crossing pass from Dominguez to push the lead to 3-1.

Jimenez's goal four minutes later capped the scoring and sent the home crowd into a frenzy.
