Montreal (11-10-10, 43 points) would've moved up from sixth to fifth place in the Eastern Conference with a victory. Instead, it dropped below the playoff line and into eighth.
Sunusi Ibrahim scored and goalkeeper James Pantemis made eight saves for Montreal.
Altidore earned the free kick after drawing a foul on Montreal's Rudy Camacho outside the top of the 18-yard box, about 10 yards to the right of the center of the field. His right-footed shot curled around the wall and beat a diving Pantemis just inside the right post.
Ibrahim, a Nigerian who turned 19 on Oct. 1, opened the scoring in the 55th minute. He couldn't quite reach a cross from the right wing for a header just inside the top of the 6-yard box, but his effort screened Toronto goalkeeper Quentin Westberg. The ball glanced off Westberg and fell at Ibrahim's feet at the right post and he tapped the ball into an open net.
Pantemis made three saves in the first half and five more in the second.
His most remarkable save came in the 71st minute off a corner kick by Toronto's Jonathan Osorio.
Altidore was left unmarked about three yards away from the net and put a forceful header on goal, but Pantemis stuck out his right arm and the ball deflected off it, leaving Altidore to first put both hands over his mouth and then to break out into laughter.
Pantemis also saved a header by Altidore in the 67th minute, a shot by Richie Laryea in the 72nd, a long-range attempt by Auro in the 78th and a 15-yard blast from Altidore in the second-to-last minute of second-half stoppage time.
One of Pantemis' first-half saves came on a diving stop of a free kick by Toronto's Patrick Mullins from just outside the top right corner of the 18-yard box in the 34th minute.
Pantemis also stopped a pair of shots by Toronto's Jacob Shaffelburg in the first half.
