Man City thrash Man United to edge closer to WSL title

Manchester City extended their lead at the top of the Women's Super League (WSL) with a dominant 3-0 derby win over Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Netherlands forward Vivianne Miedema scored twice inside the opening 20 minutes -- with a three-minute brace -- before Kerstin Casparij swept in a third, early at the start of the second half.

City moved 11 points clear of second-placed United, who had been unbeaten in nine WSL games since last losing to their local rivals in November.

Chelsea can close the gap and move above United into second place, when they host Aston Villa on Sunday.

After United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce had made an early reaction save to push a close-range effort from Miedema over the crossbar, City went ahead in the 17th minute when the Dutch international nodded in from a corner.

City struck again just two minutes later when Miedema headed home from a floated cross by Aoba Fujino.

Tullis-Joyce made another smart save to palm away Khadija Shaw's strike before City had the ball in the net again after 25 minutes.

Rebecca Knaak powered in a header, but the goal was ruled out for a push by City midfielder Yui Hasegawa in the build up.

City did have their third goal four minutes into the second half.

Full back Casparij knocked the ball home at the far post from Lauren Hemp's sweeping cross after she had broken away down the left.

United -- who had been looking to bounce back from a 3-2 first-leg midweek defeat against Bayern Munich in the Champions League -- eventually had a sustained spell during the final 20 minutes, but could not find a consolation goal.

Shaw should have added a fourth for City in added time, but dragged her shot wide from 12 yards.
