Serge Gnabry scored a first-half brace as Werder Bremen climbed out of the relegation playoff spot with a 2-1 Bundesliga victory at fellow strugglers Wolfsburg.

The former Arsenal youngster opened the scoring with a deflected strike from inside the penalty area after 10 minutes before grabbing his second goal eight minutes later, controlling a flick-on from a free kick on his chest six yards out and volleying the ball home.

Borja Mayoral reduced the deficit back to a single goal a minute later when he bungled the ball in from close range with his chest following a corner.

Wolfsburg should have rescued at least a point as both Daniel Didavi and Mayoral saw efforts hit a post while visiting goalkeeper Felix Wiedwald made a string of saves.
