Jerry Jones: Dallas' free fall 'not just' on Garrett

The Cowboys dropped their third straight game on Sunday -- this time to the previously winless Jets -- but owner/GM Jerry Jones is not ready to pin sole responsibility on coach Jason Garrett. "This is across the board," Jones said of Dallas' struggles.

The Cowboys trailed 31-3 against the Green Bay Packers last week and lost 34-24. They trailed 21-3 Sunday against the Jets and lost 24-22. Slow starts have been an issue all season. “We're putting ourselves behind. We're putting our defense in a tough spot and we're not playing complimentary football,” Dak Prescott said. “It's as simple as that. We've got to start faster. We have to get points. We have to get touchdowns and allow our defense to play from in front.”

Darnold throws 2 TDs in return, Jets edge Cowboys 24-22

Sam Darnold gave the Jets' struggling offense a huge boost by throwing two touchdown passes in his return from mononucleosis, and New York held on to beat the Dallas Cowboys 24-22 on Sunday night for their first win of the season.

The only good news for the Cowboys is Philadelphia lost as well to fall to 3-3. Next Sunday's game against the Eagles at AT&T Stadium potentially will be massive for a lot of folks with the Cowboys.

The Cowboys season has hit a crossroad with their 24-22 loss to the previously winless New York Jets. Their three-game winning streak is a distant memory with now a three-game losing streak. The offense failed in critical moments. The defense was shredded in the first half. Brett Maher kissed a 40-yard field goal attempt. Even with injuries, this should not have happened.

Brett Maher makes kicks from 50, 62 and 33 yards but misses from 40. There was a mixup in the operation because he hesitated with his footwork on the kick, pushing the ball to the right.

Byron Jones is of the field with a leg injury and Anthony Brown is questionable to return with a hamstring injury. Jourdan Lewis is working with the starter and C.J. Goodwin is the third corner. Leighton Vander Esch has not played in the opening series of the half yet either.

For the second straight week, the Cowboys have been held without a touchdown in the first half, trailing the Jets, 21-6. Without Tyron Smith, La'el Collins and Randall Cobb entering the game, and losing Amari Cooper after one series, the Cowboys have been stagnant offensively. The defense gave up the second-longest pass play in team history (a 92-yard TD) to an offense that entered the game with nine first-half points in four games.

The Cowboys defense has followed up an atrocious performance against Green Bay with an even more atrocious effort so far against the Jets. New York scored 39 points in their first four games. They scored nine points in the first half all season. The Jets have 247 yards on offense. They averaged 179.5 in the first four games.

Quite a sequence for the Cowboys. They get stopped on third-and-1 (Ezekiel Elliott run) and fourth-and-2 (Dak Prescott run) at the New York 6 and 7 and give up a 93-yard touchdown pass from Sam Darnold to Robby Anderson on the first Jets' play. It's the second-longest pass play allowed by the Cowboys. Norm Snead had a 94-yard pass to Rich Houston for the Giants on Sept. 24, 1972.

Dak Prescott is in the blue medical tent getting examined after the Cowboys' recent drive. The team is already without tackles Tyron Smith and La'el Collins and receiver Randall Cobb, who are inactive. Amari Cooper is questionable to return because of a quadriceps injury.

Todd Archer ESPN Staff Writer

Amari Cooper is standing on the sideline during the Cowboys' second drive with a quadriceps injury, according to the team's radio broadcast. Cooper suffered the injury in last week's loss to Green Bay but was able to make it through practice during the week. He said the ankle injury that bothered him earlier in the season was more of an issue than the quad. He spent time on the sideline riding the stationary bike but he does not have his helmet with him.

With Le'Veon Bell's touchdown, the Jets have more first-quarter points than they have scored in their first four games. They had 6 points in their first three games. The Cowboys helped them on that drive with four defensive penalties on the drive, including a second-down pass interference penalty on Chidobe Awuzie.

Cowboys inactives: WR Devin Smith, WR Randall Cobb, DE Joe Jackson, OL Adam Redmond, OT La'el Collins, OT Tyron Smith, DT Trysten Hill.
