WR Corey Davis bristled when asked about his comment from March, when he said he signed with the Jets based on the "understanding" that Sam Darnold would be the QB. Pressed, Davis snapped, "Zach (Wilson) is the quarterback. I'm excited about it."

Jets QB Zach Wilson declined to say if he has been vaccinated, calling it a "personal question." The NFL and the NFLPA extended COVID protocols that impose severe restrictions for unvaccinated players. Asked his reaction, Wilson said, "That's just a personal thing for everybody on the team. No matter what ... we're going to work it out."

LT Mekhi Becton, who insisted he doesn't know his current weight, said he's "doing everything in my power to keep it down." He has a personal chef to help him eat healthy; he stays in "the fish and veggie lane." He's even doing some ab work. Even though he couldn't give a number (wink, wink), Becton said he's at "a good weight." He's listed at 363. Robert Saleh suggested recently that Becton, like many young players, must improve his conditioning to last in the league.

WR Jamison Crowder said he was "a little surprised" when asked to take a pay cut. He expressed no bitterness, saying, "It's a business." He wouldn't say whether he considered refusing and testing the FA market. He took the high road, saying he's happy to be back. He played in a similar scheme in Washington, so it's not a big learning curve. Crowder said he had no reaction when they drafted Elijah Moore. He called him a "heck of a ball player."

Observations from Day 1 of minicamp: QB Zach Wilson looked tentative at times, made a couple of throws into traffic ... WR Denzel Mims behind Keelan Cole on the depth chart ... RB Michael Carter a factor in the passing game ... CB Jason Pinnock (INT), CB Brandin Echols and LB Hamsah Nasirildeen got work with the starters. Lots of rotation on the back end ... WR Corey Davis impressed in limited action ... Another good day for WR Elijah Moore ... Chris Herndon and Tyler Kroft competing for TE1.

Top storylines at Jets minicamp, which opens today: 1. S Marcus Maye and WR Jamison Crowder, both of whom skipped OTAs, are in the building. First chance to get their take on their contract situations; 2. QB Zach Wilson takes another step; 3. WR Corey Davis, LT Mekhi Becton and CB Bless Austin have been dealing with injuries. How much will they participate, if at all? 4. DE Carl (Otherworldly) Lawson makes his practice debut.

How much longer will Crowder remain a Jet after pay cut? (0:58)

As expected, S Marcus Maye has reported for minicamp, which starts tomorrow. Maye, who signed his franchise tender ($10.6M) earlier in the offseason, skipped the voluntary OTAs. The two sides are negotiating a long-term deal. The deadline is July 15. Maye won't do much this week on the field. Robert Saleh gives players a one-week, ramp-up period, as he did last week with DE Carl Lawson. This is just a matter of Maye showing up because it's mandatory and avoiding a potential $93K fine.

The Jets signed S Sharrod Neasman, 29, who played the last five seasons with the Falcons (57 games, two starts). Neasman, reunited with DC Jeff Ulbrich, played 289 snaps in 2020. He had 27 tackles and one sack. In a corresponding move, the Jets placed rookie OL Parker Ferguson on IR.

Practice: Zach Wilson didn't have his best day, but it wasn't his worst. Efficient in 7-on-7 (8-for-11), a little spotty in 11-on-11 (7-for-11). Had 1 INT (not his fault) and one near-INT (bad throw). Top 4 WRs weren't on field ... Mike White had best throw of the day ... Nice days for WRs Braxton Berrios and Elijah Moore ... With CB Bless Austin (undisclosed) out, rookie Isaiah Dunn got reps with 1s ... TE Chris Herndon had drop (INT) and a couple of nice catches ... WR Man Bailey impressed.

DE Carl Lawson, who signed a three-year, $45M contract, hasn't been attending voluntary workouts. He sends the DL coach a workout video every day, per DC Jeff Ulbrich, who believes Lawson will increase his sack total (5.5). "A lot of times, edge rushers miss because QBs can step up in the pocket," he said. "In my opinion ... we have so many interior guys, I don't know how much of a pocket there will be to step up into."

LB Jarrad Davis, addressing the media for the first time, said last season in Detroit was "challenging" because his playtime was cut (29%). Signing with the Jets was "like me taking a fresh breath of air," he said. The former No. 1 pick signed with the Jets because of the scheme, which will allow him to "simplify, simplify, simplify, and just truly be J.D." He probably will start at OLB, with C.J. Mosley in the middle.

Rookie WR Elijah Moore has demonstrated good hands and a quick burst in early practices. "Every day, I'm trying to craft," he said. The former Ole Miss start said his brief time with the Jets has been "super cool." Moore said he learned a lot from the Ole Miss WRs that came before him, D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown.

Good synopsis from Robert Saleh on how the organization will bring along rookie Zach Wilson, the presumptive starter: "You love the progress. Now it's just a matter of him continuing to get reps, get live reps, get game reps and go through bumps and bruises, but you trust that his mindset will not let him fail." Next step for Wilson: Unscripted periods in practice.
