Former Australian rugby star Valentine Holmes is trying a new sport. He's attempting to make the Jets' roster as a running back, and his position coach, Jim Bob Cooter, says he's "ahead of the curve."

The Jets' training-camp schedule, announced Monday, includes only four public practices — July 27, 28 and August 4, 11. The team reports to camp July 24 and will conduct its first practice on the 25th. The annual Green and White scrimmage will be Aug. 2 at Rutgers. They open the preseason Aug. 8 against the Giants. As usual, training camp will be held in Florham Park, N.J.

Jets GM Joe Douglas is hiring former Colts VP of player personnel Rex Hogan as assistant GM, per ESPN's Adam Schefter. This is a surprise because Bears executive Champ Kelly had been considered the favorite. Douglas has no background with Hogan, but Hogan is familiar with some of the roster because he was the Jets' director of college scouting from 2015 to 2017 under ex-GM Mike Maccagnan — the Leo Williams/Darron Lee/Jamal Adams drafts. Douglas also is hiring longtime personnel man Phil Savage as a senior adviser and Chad Alexander (Ravens) as director of player personnel, per Schefter.

Just recently, Jets QB Sam Darnold was asked, "Who's your new Josh McCown?" Not wanting to slight his teammates, Darnold said nice things about the other QBs on the roster, led by Trevor Siemian. Truth is, Darnold will miss McCown, who announced his retirement on Monday. Darnold has known for months McCown wouldn't be back, so this isn't shocking news. Still, he's bound to experience some Josh withdrawal once the season begins. He was tied to McCown's hip last season, leaning on him before, during and after games. They lived in the same building. They ate together. Watched film at night together. When Darnold struggled, he got pep talks from McCown, an unselfish player with vast experience — a rare combo. Darnold will get coached up by Adam Gase & Co., but it won't be the same as having a teammate/mentor.

Bears executive Champ Kelly is under serious consideration for a prominent role in the Jets' front office, ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports. Kelly, the Bears' assistant director of player personnel, interviewed for the GM job that went to Joe Douglas. Kelly and Douglas worked together in Chicago, so there's familiarity. Kelly also knows Adam Gase from years together in Denver. Indications are that Kelly could have the title of assistant GM. ESPN's Todd McShay has withdrawn from consideration, per Mortensen.

Another day, another cornerback. Jets GM Joe Douglas has signed former Bucs CB Mark Myers, who was an undrafted free agent in 2018. He has no NFL experience. The Jets waived S John Battle.

The Jets held the final practice of the offseason on Thursday. Call it a patchwork day. Several backups, including rookies, were used with the first team because a handful of vets were missing (it was voluntary). For instance: DTs Quinnen Williams and Nathan Shepherd got work with the first defense. WR Robby Anderson remained on the sideline with an apparent injury. RB Ty Montgomery capped a strong offseason with a good showing. The Jets love his versatility. A natural wide receiver, he could see time in both positions throughout the season. RB Bilal Powell was limited to individual drills, but he made a nice catch and received a compliment from Adam Gase.

First acquisition for GM Joe Douglas: The Jets have claimed CB Montrel Meander on waivers from the Raiders. He has ties to DC Gregg Williams, as he spent 12 weeks on the Browns' 2018 practice squad. First of many waiver pick-ups for Douglas.
