Patriots sign trick-shot kicker to practice squad

The Patriots added an unusual layer of insurance at kicker on Wednesday by signing Josh Gable -- who played professional soccer and in the Indoor Football League -- to their practice squad.

Goodell on Pats probe: Won't rush to conclusions

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday that the league won't make any judgments until the completion of an investigation into the Patriots inappropriately filming the Bengals sideline during Sunday's game in Cleveland.

WR Julian Edelman did not participate in Wednesday's practice and is listed on the injury report with knee and shoulder ailments. Meanwhile, the following players were limited: LB Ja'Whaun Bentley (knee), DT Byron Cowart (concussion), C Ted Karras (knee), CB Jason McCourty (knee), WR Mohamed Sanu (ankle) and DT Danny Shelton (shoulder). Finally, QB Tom Brady (right elbow) and WR N'Keal Harry (hip) were full participants.

The Patriots have signed kicker Josh Gable to their practice squad, according to ESPN's Field Yates, and Gable was present at Wednesday's practice wearing jersey No. 5. Gable has generated attention on social media for his trick-shot kicks, and after playing indoor football, this is his first opportunity in the NFL. He previously worked out for the Patriots, in addition to the Bears and Colts.

Injury notes from Patriots practice: WR Julian Edelman (shoulder) and DT Byron Cowart (head) were not spotted at the media-access portion of practice, while C Ted Karras (knee) was.

The Patriots had rookie free-agent DB Jayson Stanley (Georgia) in for a workout. Stanley was a WR before converting to CB after joining the Falcons as an undrafted free agent in the offseason. He was most recently on the Dolphins' practice squad.

The Patriots have two new openings on the practice squad as DB Nate Brooks was signed to the Dolphins' 53-man roster and C Tyler Gauthier landed with the Jaguars. Meanwhile, DT Albert Huggins has signed with the Eagles' practice squad after being waived by New England on Saturday.
