Washington will have an open competition this summer for its starting quarterback job, according to coach Ron Rivera, who said he learned a lesson from last season and the "mistake" he made by naming Dwayne Haskins as the starter early.

WFT's Sweat 'not a fan' of vax despite expert talk

Montez Sweat said he wasn't persuaded to take the COVID-19 vaccine even after the WFT had an immunologist who is a leading coronavirus vaccine researcher speak to players. "I probably won't get vaccinated until I get more facts and that stuff," he said.

Retired QB Smith wins PFWA's Halas Award

Retired Washington quarterback Alex Smith has won the George Halas Award, presented by the Pro Football Writers of America for overcoming adversity.

Running back Antonio Gibson earned his degree this offseason, saying he wanted it for him but also for his mom and sister who sacrificed for him. Gibson also said he became the first male on both his mom and dad's side to earn a degree. He wants to serve as a role model for those in his family younger than him. "Football is going to end," he said, "a lot of things are going to end, jobs might end. But you can't take a degree away from you."

Dr. Barbara Roberts, hired by Washington as its first full-time Director of Wellness and Clinical Services, said they want to proactively address mental health issues to stave off problems before they intensify. She said they're "looking for coping methods... and looking at some behaviors and issues they need to strengthen." She already has been working with the rookies and has been doing work here since early spring. She said owner Dan Snyder was the one who suggested making her role full-time.

Oft-traveled Fitzpatrick sticks to plan with WFT

Starting over yet again with his ninth NFL franchise in 16 years, Washington quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick said "maybe it is easier for me to switch teams than other guys" because of his formulated plan to ease the transition.

WFT all-time sacks leader Kerrigan joins Eagles

Four-time Pro Bowl edge rusher Ryan Kerrigan, the Washington Football Team's all-time sacks leader, announced Monday that he is signing with the Eagles.

Washington has signed all of its draft picks: LB Jamin Davis, OT Sam Cosmi, CB Benjamin St-Juste, WR Dyami Brown, TE John Bates, S Darrick Forrest, LS Cameron Cheeseman, DE William Bradley-King, DE/LB Shaka Toney and WR Dax Milne. The team announced the moves Thursday night.
