Anigwe has 28 and 25, No. 20 Cal women hold off Brown 89-79
PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Kristine Anigwe had 28 points and a career-high 25 rebounds and No. 20 California survived Brown's school-record onslaught of 3-pointers to defeat the Brown Bears 89-79 on Sunday.
The Golden Bears (1-1), whose coach Lindsay Gottlieb graduated from Brown in 1999, dominated statistically everywhere but shooting, where Shayna Mehta poured in a career-high 33 points, knocking down a Brown record nine 3-pointers on 14 attempts.
Cal had 58 rebounds to 31 for Brown (2-1) with a 26-11 advantage on the offensive end for a 46-22 difference on points in the paint. Cal went to the foul line 30 times but missed 13 free throws while Brown was 5 for 5. But until the Brown Bears missed five of their last six shots they were in the game, trailing 81-75 on a Mehta jumper with 4:44 left.
Brown made a school record 16 3-pointers on 41 attempts.
Penina Davidson had 15 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Bears. Kianna Smith had 12 points, and Asha Thomas and Jaelyn Brown 11 each. Anigwe's 25 rebounds were the second-most in Division I this season and one shy of the school record.
