Yeaney helps Hoosiers upset No. 10 Iowa 75-73
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- With the game on the line, Indiana's Bendu Yeaney made huge plays on both ends of the court to lift the Hoosiers to the upset of Indiana.
The sophomore guard scored with 3.8 seconds left and blocked a potential game-winning shot in Indiana' 75-73 upset of No. 10 Iowa on Thursday night.
With the game tied at 73, she drove for go-ahead basket. Tania Davis tried a 3 at the buzzer that Yeaney blocked to snap a four-game skid for the Hoosiers (18-10, 7-9 Big Ten).
"That's what my team asks from me," Yeaney said. "They want me to make big plays at big moments. That's all I did."
Iowa (21-6, 12-4) fell a game behind conference leader Maryland with two games left in the regular season.
"This is new territory for us," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said of being ranked in the top 10 and playing for a conference championship. "Our prep was great. We just got tight. I think we thought a little too much about what was at stake."
The victory was Indiana coach Teri Moren's 100th at Indiana and 299th overall.
"Any time beat the 10th-ranked team in the country and get your 100th win, it's going to be a big night," Moren said.
Indiana trailed Iowa 49-33 before outscoring the Hawkeyes 42-24 over the final 15 minutes. Ali Patberg's 3-pointer with 2:36 left gave the Hoosiers a 68-65 lead. Her free throw made it 71-67.
Megan Gufaston converted a three-point play and after Jaelynn Penn hit two free throws that gave the Hoosiers a 73-70 advantage.
Davis tied the game at 73 with a 3-pointer with 21.3 seconds left.
The Hoosiers were led by junior Brianna Wise, who finished with 24 points and keyed Indiana's late run. Patberg, who had missed Indiana's last three games with a shoulder injury, added 21.
Gustafson, the nation's leading scorer, finished with 26 points and 12 rebounds to lead Iowa. Kathleen Doyle added 17 points and nine assists.
Doyle and Makenzie Meyer each made a pair of 3-point attempts in the first quarter as Iowa ran out to a 24-12 lead. Indiana trailed 38-30 at the break.
An 11-0 Iowa run gave the Hawkeyes their largest lead at 49-33 midway through the third quarter, but Indiana answered with a Patberg-led 18-5 spurt. Wise nailed a 3 at the third-quarter buzzer to get Indiana within 54-51 heading into the final period.
BIG PICTURE
Iowa: The Hawkeyes appeared to be in the Big Ten driver's seat when they had a 16-point lead and Maryland trailed Minnesota by double figures. However, the Terrapins came back for a big 71-69 win and Iowa now trails by a game in the Big Ten standings with two games remaining.
Indiana: The win should go a long way to bolstering Indiana's NCAA Tournament resume.
TURNING POINT
The Hawkeyes led 49-33 with 5:23 left in the third quarter when Wise connected on a 3-pointer then added a 14-footer on Indiana's next possession. The Hoosiers outscored Iowa 18-5 to close the third quarter then had a 24-19 edge in the fourth to pull off the upset.
STAT OF THE NIGHT
