Syracuse picks up close home win over Georgia Tech

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- — Dyaisha Fair scored 17 points, Izabel Varejao added 13 points in her first game since Dec. 4 and No. 23 Syracuse beat Georgia Tech 62-59 on Thursday night to snap a five-game losing streak in the series.

It was Syracuse's first win against Georgia Tech since Tiana Mangakahia scored the second-most points in Carrier Dome history (44) on Jan. 4, 2018.

Fair made a wide-open 3-pointer in transition, following a turnover, to give Syracuse a 56-55 advantage. The lead changed four more times with Varejao putting Syracuse ahead for good with 1:57 left.

Syracuse made a steal under its basket on an inbounds play and Fair was fouled before making 1 of 2 free throws with 30.2 seconds left for a 61-59 lead. After a timeout, Tonie Morgan was short on a jumper from the free-throw line and Syracuse was awarded the ball after a tie-up.

Fair went 1 of 2 from the stripe again with 13.5 left to put Syracuse ahead 62-59. Syracuse freshman Alyssa Latham grabbed the offensive rebound, but she missed two free throws to give Georgia Tech another shot. Georgia Tech had two chances at a 3-pointer but Rusne Augustinaite was off on a shot from well beyond the arc and Morgan stepped on the out-of-bounds line.

Latham had 12 points and eight rebounds for Syracuse (19-4, 9-3 ACC).

Kara Dunn scored 17 points, Kayla Blackshear added 15 and Morgan had 12 for Georgia Tech (14-10, 5-7).

Georgia Tech led 31-28 at halftime despite going without a field goal for the final 5:45 of the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets missed their final six shots of the half and the cold shooting continued in the third quarter to make it 10 straight misses.

Syracuse stays home to play No. 15 Louisville on Sunday. Georgia Tech returns home to play Miami on Sunday.
