Miami Marlins president Mike Hill said unequivocally that Miami is not shopping Jose Fernandez, as Clark Spencer writes:
The Marlins aren't trying to trade Fernandez, and they're telling teams they have no intention of doing so anytime soon, according to one top team official.
"He's not available," said Michael Hill, Marlins president of baseball operations. "We haven't made him available. But it doesn't stop the phone calls from coming."
And it doesn't rule out the possibility that Miami could change course and move Fernandez; in fact, one source says the circumstances for a possible deal are shifting. Early on Monday, the source indicated the odds of a Fernandez trade were, on a scale of 1 to 100, "a zero. No -- one."
Later Monday, the same source indicated that number had shifted into the 40s, as in a 40-percent chance.
Look, it only makes sense for the Marlins to weigh all the possibilities. Fernandez is one of the best young pitchers in baseball, and he could help manager Don Mattingly win in his first year with the Marlins in 2016. But Fernandez is also a client of Scott Boras, an agent who almost always takes his guys into free agency. After the 2018 season, Fernandez would almost certainly walk away from the Marlins.
Additionally: Because of the high prices paid out in free agency -- $217 million to David Price, $206-plus million to Zack Greinke, $110 million to Jordan Zimmermann -- the return for someone like Fernandez may never surpass what it is right now.
