How close is gap between McDavid, Crosby?

Connor McDavid has been making opponents look bad all season. How soon will we be referring to him as the best hockey player in the world? David Hahn/Icon Sportswire

First, let’s be clear. Sidney Crosby is the best hockey player in the world. The hockey universe is getting some vintage Crosby right now. In 2015, he helped Team Canada win the IIHF World Championships to punch his ticket in the "Triple Gold" club. He’s coming off a Conn Smythe performance in the playoffs, where he led the Pittsburgh Penguins to another Stanley Cup championship.

He followed that up with an MVP performance in the World Cup, where he led Canada to the championship. It’s like he's working his way down a grocery store list to the Hall of Fame. Milk. Check. Multiple Stanley Cups. Check. Winning every possible international hockey tournament. Check.

Since returning from his concussion, he has eight goals in six games. He’s catapulted himself right back into the scoring race after giving the rest of the league a head start.

Even with the late start, he’s put himself on a pace to score 117 points this season, which he won’t do. At least ... probably not.

So tonight, when Connor McDavid faces Crosby for the first time, it’s a glimpse of what’s possible for McDavid.
