Even though it squeaked out a win over Army, Michigan's chance to reach the playoff took a nosedive from 20% to 3% after yesterday, per the Allstate Playoff Predictor. FPI was severely unimpressed with the Wolverines' performance and downgraded them accordingly.

Harbaugh looking for UM to clean it up offensively

Michigan needed double overtime to beat Army on Saturday after committing three first-half fumbles and six penalties, leaving coach Jim Harbaugh to say the offense needs to become a well-oiled machine going forward.

Both Jim Harbaugh and running back Zach Charbonnet referenced protection issues by Michigan's running backs, which led to the second Shea Patterson fumble. Harbaugh said Michigan might do more live-tackling drills with its running backs during the open-week practice to simulate blocking situations they'll face in games.

Jim Harbaugh: "That's how you fight. That's how you scratch and claw. Both teams did that." Adds that he could talk about Michigan's defense all day. The offense had mistakes that put the defense in tough spots.

Like Army did in the first half, Michigan makes the Black Knights pay for a head-scratching turnover. Lavert Hill's interception of Kelvin Hopkins Jr.'s second pass attempt sets up a 12-play, 78-yard touchdown drive. Michigan's offense remains a bit choppy but Shea Patterson and his receivers connected for several key plays, including a 25-yarder to Ronnie Bell on third-and-7 to set up the game-tying touchdown.

Big question going into second half is when/how much we see Michigan backup QB Dylan McCaffrey. Offensive coordinator Josh Gattis recently told me, "If we can get Dylan on the field, we're going to do it. I don't think it serves us to have someone who we feel is one of our best playmakers sitting on the bench all game, [just] because we have a talented player ahead of him."

Army has followed its upset script to near-perfection, leading Michigan 14-7 at halftime following two touchdowns after Wolverines fumbles. Michigan's defense has held up fairly well (3.5 ypp allowed), but quarterback Shea Patterson looks extremely shaky, and the Wolverines haven't found any consistent rhythm on offense. In a low-possession game, Michigan must find a way to be more efficient in the second half or risk a major setback.
