England 245 for 7 (Knight 101, Rowe 4-47) beat New Zealand 244 for 8 (Martin 65*, Satterthwaite 54) by three wickets
Heather Knight's century secured a scintillating victory for England and an unassailable 3-1 lead in their ODI series against New Zealand in Derby.
Knight, the England captain, led her side to their highest successful ODI run-chase with 101 off 107 balls after the tourists had posted 244 for 8 on the back of half-centuries to Katey Martin and Amy Satterthwaite.
While the hosts had flagged the likelihood of rotating players throughout the five-match series and have done just that, New Zealand's decision to rest Lea Tahuhu, a star of the White Ferns' victory in Leicester, and fellow quick Molly Penfold, who took two wickets on debut in that match, was more surprising.
But Hannah Rowe, returning to the Kiwi side as a result, played her part, claiming four wickets to put the pressure on England after their pursuit had begun brightly.
England cruised to 49 without loss after 10 overs after winning the toss at the fourth attempt and putting New Zealand in. But then Rowe struck twice in quick succession to remove both openers, Lauren Winfield-Hill bowled for 33 and Tammy Beaumont caught behind by Martin for just 16.
Nat Sciver's lean run continued when she was trapped lbw by Rowe, meaning that her highest score of New Zealand's tour so far is 14 in the opening T20I, and all of a sudden England were 71 for 3 in the 16th over.
Knight and Amy Jones then shared a fourth-wicket stand of 100 to steady the innings. Jones' knock was encouraging in the context of England's middle-order struggles as she reached 40 - her highest score of the tour - until she holed out to Jess Kerr at mid-off to give Rowe her fourth wicket.
But Knight remained in control until the penultimate over. When Sophia Dunkley fell lbw to Satterthwaite without scoring, England needed to score at a run a ball for the last 10 overs with Knight and Danni Wyatt at the crease.
Knight's leg-side drive for four off Rowe to move to 81 was as pretty as it was pivotal to England's cause and Wyatt broke the tension with a powerful six over deep midwicket off Rowe while another four from Knight in the same direction two balls later brought the target in sight.
Knight brought up her second ODI ton driving Devine through backward point and diving to make her ground on the second run. She fell on the second ball of Devine's next over, the 49th of the innings, caught in the deep by Brooke Halliday, but she had done enough.
A late wobble when Devine had Wyatt out lbw for a run-a-ball 27 left England needing six from the last over but Anya Shrubsole wasted no time, leveling the scores with a four back over spin bowler Leigh Kasperek's head followed by a single. While Sophie Ecclestone's stumping off a wide made for an anticlimactic finish, the margin of victory - three wickets with just three balls remaining - meant the excitement held to the end.
Shrubsole was playing her first international match since early July, having missed the first two T20Is of New Zealand's tour before spraining her ankle at training ahead of the third.
With Katherine Brunt, Kate Cross and Tash Farrant rested, Shrubsole led the attack alongside Sciver - who had sat out the third ODI, which New Zealand won by three wickets to keep the series alive ahead of this match with Sunday's final fixture at Canterbury now a dead rubber.
Shrubsole's first over went for nine runs but, after Sciver ran out Suzie Bates for 17 in the sixth over, Shrubsole struck in each of her next two with some prodigious swing to have Maddy Green caught by Freya Davies at mid-on and then bowl Lauren Down with a beauty that hooped in to hit off-stump, by which time New Zealand were 33 for 3.
But then Satterthwaite settled into a 56-run partnership with Devine, the latter reaching 41 before she was out lbw, the first of young off-spinner Charlie Dean's three wickets.
Sattherthwaite had to marshal another recovery effort and she did so in partnership with Martin, the pair putting on 84 runs for the fifth wicket. Martin's footwork was sublime as she skipped down the pitch to dispatch Knight and Dean down the ground for four. She also swept beautifully on her way to seven fours in all during a knock that broke a wretched run of form in which she had only reached double figures once previously on this tour with 13 not out in the third T20I.
Martin had scored 52 in New Zealand's warm-up match against England A but she had gone three years without an international fifty and in ODIs it had been even longer, dating back to March 2017 and 30 innings.
When Dean bowled Satterthwaite round her legs, New Zealand were in far better shape at 173 for 5 and then Brooke Halliday offered an excellent cameo of 28 off just 19 balls, including a six off Dean, muscled back down the ground. Rowe chimed in with 15 off 14 to push New Zealand to the highest total of the series so far, but England had the final say on that point, thanks to Knight.
