Stuart Broad says England players should sledge if it is part of their natural game and believes it is "good to see" his team-mates playing with passion.

West Indies batsman Marlon Samuels said he used Ben Stokes' attempts to rile him as motivation to notch 103 in the opening innings of the second Test in Grenada.

"If you are the sort of character who likes to feel you are in a battle, then make sure you do that," Broad said of engaging in sledging.

"There's no point sitting back. I know the International Cricket Council are very strict about what you are allowed to do and what looks good on TV, but you can't let that take away from your natural game.

"We've got a few guys in this squad who like to be in a battle and I think you need that in Test cricket. When two players are playing with passion for their country, that's good to see."

After scoring 94 runs on the opening day in Grenada, Samuels said: "It's obvious the English boys don't learn because whenever they talk to me I continue scoring runs."

However, he was dismissed after making just nine runs on the second day when edging a James Anderson delivery to slip.

West Indies were bowled out for 299 before Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott took England to 74/0 at close on day two. The sides remain locked in the three-Test series after the opening Test in Antigua was drawn.
