BROWNSVILLE, Texas -- Officials say several runners were hurt when part of a metal structure collapsed at the starting line before a race in South Texas.
The city of Brownsville said in a statement that the accident happened Saturday morning just before the Bi-National 10K & 5K Run. Officials did not immediately say how many people were hurt. Some were taken by ambulance to hospitals for evaluation.
Authorities are trying to determine what caused the collapse. The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for Saturday morning through the early evening.
Interim City Manager Michael L. Lopez said no additional information will be released because of the investigation and to respect the privacy of those involved.
The race was held as scheduled following the accident.
