Liverpool to beat Chelsea in all-English UEFA Super Cup?

Another weekend profit for the column after we tipped up Mohamed Salah to score first against Norwich and Lyon to beat Monaco at 11/8. Plenty of games coming up this week including the UEFA Super Cup clash between Liverpool and Chelsea.

Running total: +£9.25

The Banker

Wednesday sees an all-English UEFA Super Cup final, something of a rarity in the modern game. The showpiece in Istanbul provides Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool with another opportunity to win a major European trophy following their Champions League final win over Tottenham earlier this summer. Liverpool eased to a 4-1 win over Norwich City on Friday and they look worthy 4/7 favourites here, but Klopp will know they need to improve defensively.

Frank Lampard's first Premier League match as Chelsea boss was one to forget, as the Blues were hammered 4-0 by Manchester United. In truth the scoreline probably flattered the Red Devils, with Chelsea hitting the woodwork twice and playing well for over an hour at Old Trafford. However their defensive frailties were again exposed and they could be caught on the counter by Liverpool in this one. The Blues are going to be reliant on youth this season and it remains to be seen how they are going to fill the void in attack left by Eden Hazard. It could get worse before it gets better for Lampard, who Jose Mourinho criticised after that Old Trafford mauling by suggesting they were unnecessarily lacking experience in their starting line-up. Liverpool to win without conceding is a 15/8 shout and looks solid given Chelsea's limitations up front and at the back.

Selection: £4 on Liverpool to win to nil at 15/8 with bet365.

The First Goal Flutter

Mohamed Salah looked ominously sharp for Liverpool against Manchester City in the Community Shield last weekend and could be the pick at 3/1 to score first against Norwich City on Friday night. The Egyptian has bagged 54 Premier League goals and won two Golden Boots (one shared) since joining the Merseyside giants two summers ago.

Three goals from his first eight Premier League games last season had critics dismissing him as a "one season wonder" but he ended up banging in 22 in the league and will again be Liverpool's main attacking threat this term.

Selection: £2 on Salah to score first at 3/1 with bet365.

The Tasty Treble

Celtic are tentative 4/7 favourites to beat Cluj this week. The Hoops will face Czech side Slavia Prague in the Champions League playoff round should they defeat the Romanians in their third qualifying round second leg, with the tie very much in the balance at 1-1. Cluj boss Dan Petrescu has already started the mind games ahead of Tuesday's showdown by insisting referees favour the Hoops at Parkhead. However we still fancy Celtic, who beat Motherwell 5-2 at the weekend, to get the job done.

Elsewhere, LASK Linz look must bet materiel at 6/5 to beat FC Basel. The Austrian side were good value for their 2-1 win at St. Jakob-Park and could have won by more if their finishing had been a bit more clinical. Back at the Linzer Stadion and roared on by their home fans, they can pick off a Basel side who have not looked great defensively in recent weeks. Finally add in FC Porto at 4/7, who look a class above FC Krasnodar. The Portuguese side scored a last minute winner in the first leg but it should be much more comfortable at the Estadio do Dragao. The European threefold pays a little under 9/2 with bet365 and looks to have a great chance.

Selection: £3 on the treble at 4.3/1 with bet365.

The Wildcard Tip

Chelsea were undone by a couple of lightening Manchester United counter attacks on Sunday and there are few better teams on the counter in Europe than Liverpool in full flow. Salah has looked very sharp in the games he has played so far while Divock Origi is fast turning into a Kop icon. Kurt Zouma and the rest of Chelsea's defence seem to struggle against genuine pace so a small wager on Liverpool to win 3-0 on Wednesday could be the play.

Selection: Liverpool to win 3-0 at 7/1 with bet365.
