Rivaldo, Roger Milla and other over-40s Cristiano Ronaldo hopes to emulate

Cristiano Ronaldo says he wants to play for Real Madrid for another decade and retire when he is 41 years old. But who are some of the other outfield players (not goalkeepers) who have surpassed the big 40?

We may never see the likes of Sir Stanley Matthews, who played at age 50, or Japanese legend Kazuyoshi Miura, who holds the records for being the oldest footballer and oldest goalscorer in Japan's professional leagues at 49, again but here are five who carried on their careers well into old age (in footballing terms).

Roger Milla

Rivaldo

Teddy Sheringham

Romario

Paolo Maldini

And if you wanted to make an XI -- there are plenty of goalkeepers by the way -- then there are some other big names who you may consider: Cuauhtemoc Blanco (42), Stuart Pearce (41), Amedeo Carboni (41), Gordon Strachan (40), Ryan Giggs (40), Javier Zanetti (40) and Alessandro Costacurta (40) to name but a few.
