MSL: Durakovic's Selangor register 2-0 home win over Sarawak

Selangor have continued their climb up the Malaysian Super League (MSL) table, beating Sarawak 2-0 at the Stadium Shah Alam on Saturday night.

Goals in each half from Afiq Azmi and Fitri Shazwan Raduwan were enough as the Red Giants took all three points to extend their unbeaten run to five games in all competitions.

The two teams came into the match with almost identical records, both claiming a win, two draws and a loss in the early stages of the season.

They also had a goal difference of plus-one, with Sarawak's extra goal putting them in seventh place, one spot ahead of Selangor.

Following a slow start to the season, the Red Giants were coming off a 4-1 hammering of PDRM last time out.

They also progressed in the FA Cup, overcoming MSL league leaders Felda United in a penalty shootout.

Sarawak had been less convincing, losing 2-1 to Johor Darul Ta'zim last weekend, which followed an FA Cup loss to Kelantan by the same scoreline.

The Crocs then copped a blow in just the second minute of the game when Ronald Hikspoors sustained a leg injury and had to be replaced by Varathan Arumugam.

In the 10th minute, Selangor took the lead. A corner was sent to the back post, which towering former Socceroo Robbie Cornthwaite met with a header back into the danger area.

The ball fell towards an unmarked Azmi who had the simple task of nodding it home.

Eleven minutes later, Sarawak thought they had an equaliser with their first real attempt on goal.

Former A-League combatants Billy Mehmet and Ryan Griffiths combined well, with the former's perfectly weighted cross allowing Griffiths to power his header into the back of the net.

But the goal was disallowed for a Griffith foul on Nazmi Faiz, which seemed a harsh call on the Australian and left him shaking his head in disbelief.

On 28 minutes, Sarawak defender Mohd Hairol Mokhtar should have done better when a free kick fell invitingly for him, but he couldn't untangle his legs and get any decent purchase on the ball.

Ahmad Hazwan Bakri who has made two appearances for the Malaysian national team, orchestrated another opening in the shadows of half time, creating space for himself and crossing for Azmi.

He was unable to get his header on target as Selangor went to the change rooms with a one goal advantage.

Selangor were again the better side after the break and in the 71st minute that man Bakri almost doubled their lead, with his wicked free kick cannoning off the inside of the post.

Six minutes later, Selangor finally made the game safe.

Sarawak keeper Fadzley Rahim came charging off his line and missed the ball completely, allowing Fitri Shazwan Raduwan to tuck it home into an empty net as Selangor moved towards the top of the MSL table.
