Selangor score late through Juliano Mineiro to knock Kedah off top of MSL

Juliano Mineiro buried home a penalty rebound deep into stoppage time to earn Selangor a 1-1 draw to knock Kedah off the top of the Malaysia Super League table.

The dramatic finale at Selayang Stadium on Wednesday night came after Pahang had beaten PKNS FC 3-0 a day earlier to reach the MSL summit.

Mineiro's third goal in two games cancelled out Sandro Da Silva's delicious free kick for Kedah in the 81st minute.

Kedah were in imperious form coming into this showdown after winning four of their last five matches.

They were, however, without injured skipper Baddrol Bakhtiar, while Syazwan Zainon only made the bench.

It was Selangor who managed a first shot on target after Brazilian-born playmaker Mineiro hit a free kick straight at Ifwat Akmal in the sixth minute.

The Timorese forward had the ball in the net five minutes later, but it was correctly chalked off for offside.

Kedah's form has been largely due to their sumptuous, one-touch football, and they kept the Selangor defence camped in their own half for sustained periods of the first half.

Fitri Omar came close to giving them a 12th minute lead. But his free kick from 30 yards out grazed the top of the Selangor net, as the Canaries started to impose themselves on the host with sustained periods of possession.

Minerio was proving Selangor's biggest attacking outlet in the first half, and the attacker stung Ifwat's hands with another set piece in the 35th minute.

Tan Cheng Hoe introduced Syazwan after the break in bid to find a breakthrough past a disciplined Selangor defence.

They almost went ahead on the hour mark as Liridon Krasniqi's exquisite threaded ball took Ken Ilso clean on goal.

But the Dane, who has already scored three times this season, sliced his shot just wide.

Selangor brought on young striker Adam Nor Azlin in the 66th minute as P. Maniam looked to hit the Canaries on the break, seemingly happy with a counter-attacking strategy.

But the Red Giants' resilience wilted with nine minutes remaining through a moment of brilliance of their substitute Sandro Da Silva.

The Brazilian arrowed home a perfect free kick into the top corner from just outside the box, with Khairul Azhan powerless to do much.

It was fast-finishing Kedah's 10th goal scored in the second half of seven MSL matches in 2017.

Just as it seem another win on the cards for Kedah, Selangor were handed a lifeline in the 95th minute. Referee Zohri Tajudin pointed to the spot after Syahmi Safari was brought down in the box by Akram Mahinan.

Victor Astafei's spot kick was superbly saved by Ifwat, but Mineiro was on hand to turn home the rebound as both teams settled for a point.

Elsewhere, Penang picked up their first point of the season after six consecutive defeats when Reinaldo Lobo's 88th minute equaliser earned them a 1-1 draw at home to Melaka United.

Kelantan won 4-2 at Perak after a Mohammed Ghaddar hat trick, while T-Team drew 0-0 with 10-man Felda United.
