Ten-man Austria struggle to impose themselves in loss to Hungary

After a very promising first half, Austria lost 2-0 to Hungary following a harsh red card for centre-back Aleksandar Dragovic and a fantastic second-half performance by Bernd Storck's team.

Despite David Alaba striking the post after just 30 seconds, Marcel Koller's team fell apart against a tactically astute Hungary. Adam Szalai's opening goal arrived on the back of mistakes from Martin Hinteregger, and four minutes later Austria were down to 10. Zoltan Stieber sealed the three points for the Hungarians, adding their second in the 87th minute.

Player ratings (1-10; 10=best; players introduced after 70 minutes get no rating):

GK Robert Almer, 7 -- He hardly had to prove his qualities in the first 45 minutes, but he was one very important player in the second half as he kept his side in the game. Hardly had a chance at either goal.

DF Florian Klein, 5 -- Had a decent start, especially in the surprisingly solid defence, even though he neglected his attacking role and couldn't support Martin Harnik on the right wing. Had a weak second-half performance and was one of the weak links in the Austrian defence.

DF Aleksandar Dragovic, 7 -- Was one of the key defenders until he got sent off. Probably the main reason Hungary didn't have too many chances in the first half. In the second period, he made more mistakes, and his sending off left a big gap in the Austrian defence.

DF Martin Hinteregger, 6 -- "Inconsistent" would best sum up Hinteregger's performance. After a decent tackle often came a big mistake. Several of his mistakes led to the first goal and he struggled to replace Dragovic as Austria's only centre-back.

DF Christian Fuchs, 5 -- Had a good start to the match and combined very well with David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic on the left side in the first half, but as time went by, he made more and more mistakes and surprisingly misplaced many passes, leading to Hungarian counter-attacks.

MF David Alaba, 7 -- Effective but made several mistakes and was too inconsistent. A part of Austria's big scenes, but just like Fuchs, he misplaced too many passes and made too many missteps.

MF Julian Baumgartlinger, 9 -- Probably the best man on the pitch. Baumgartlinger was everywhere and drove Hungarians crazy with his interceptions, his calmness and his secure passing. He was the only player that could keep his form over 90 minutes.

MF Martin Harnik, 4 -- The right side was quite neglected on Tuesday, and Harnik seemed to have missed support from Klein. He didn't have many good moments and was one of the weaker players on the pitch.

MF Zlatko Junuzovic, 7 -- Together with Baumgartlinger, Junuzovic was the most active player on the pitch. Was fouled often and later had to leave the pitch due injury. Even though he kept on fighting, it was easy to see that the Werder Bremen midfielder was in pain, but even with an injured ankle he was one of Austria's best players.

MF Marko Arnautovic, 5 -- Just like everyone on the left side, had a decent start but didn't have the same impact as in the past few months as the Hungarians smartly limited his space. As time went by, his attitude got worse and so did his performance.

FW Marc Janko, 5 -- One of the most inactive players in the first half. He hardly saw the ball and had to change his style of play. After being on the receiving end of more long passes from the defence, he played more defensive and tried to win more aerial balls. He didn't get much help, and wasn't involved in a single scoring chance.

Substitutes

MF Marcel Sabitzer, 6 -- Came on for the injured Junuzovic. Tried very hard but Hungary had already taken over the match and he hardly had an impact on the team's performance.

FW Rubin Okotie, 4 -- A weak performance by the Austrian forward as he hardly got the ball and didn't do any better than Janko, whom he replaced.

MF Alessandro Schopf, NR -- Replaced Harnik, but hardly had time to show up.
