Marcus Rashford Euro 2016 call-up would be too soon - Nicky Butt

Manchester United's academy boss Nicky Butt has said picking Marcus Rashford for England's Euro 2016 squad could "backfire on everybody."

England manager Roy Hodgson has said 18-year-old Rashford, who scored four goals in his first two United appearances, was neither ruled in nor ruled out of the squad for the tournament.

Butt, however, told BBC Sport he believed a call-up would be a step too far for Rashford at this stage of his development as a player.

"I think that's well too soon for Marcus," he said. "It could backfire on everybody really, and might not be the right thing for him.

"I'm not telling an England manager what to do -- it's his job to pick whoever he feels he should.

"But for me, Rashford is a young boy who's still learning the game and has got a long way to go yet.

"He has phenomenal potential for England and Manchester United and I think [picking him] too soon might do him more damage than good."
