Juan Carlos Osorio: Mexico has great chance to win Copa America

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio is confident his team has a realistic shot at winning the Copa America Centenario.

Mexico beat Chile 1-0 in its final preparation game against Chile to give Osorio a perfect start of seven wins in seven games in charge.

"We arrive [at the tournament] in a very good moment," Osorio said. "With the talent and commitment of the players, combined with the strategy and the way they are carrying out the plans we have decided on, Mexico has a great chance [to win the Copa America]."

Mexico goes into Sunday's Group C opener against Uruguay having broken its record for the longest it has ever gone without conceding. The team has now gone 730 minutes without letting in a goal, breaking the previous record of 722 minutes from 1971.

El Tri is also now 19 games undefeated in all competition, which is the longest streak of any team in international football.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for Mexico against Chile, however, with the current Copa America holders dominating for most of the first half and failing to convert numerous dangerous opportunities into goals.

Midfielder Andres Guardado, however, stressed the positives of the 1-0 win, which came courtesy of an 86th-minute goal from Javier Hernandez on his 28th birthday.

"The team knows how to suffer," PSV Eindhoven's Guardado said after the game. "[The win] helps the confidence and atmosphere and we leave happy, although we are aware that we did a lot of things badly, that Chile was a lot superior to us at times and we have to learn from that."

Chile coach Juan Antonio Pizzi goes into Monday's Group D match against Argentina under some pressure after losing three of the first four matches in charge, but isn't overly concerned.

"The result of the game [1-0 to Mexico] wasn't a reflection of what happened on the field," Pizzi said in his postmatch news conference. "In the four games, we've played well, [although] it's true we haven't been able to win and have lost three of them."
