Gomez, 28, has just returned from more serious ligament damage in his right knee, but has been ordered to rest for another week after damage was discovered to his medial collateral ligament after a scan on Monday, according to a statement on the club's website.

The German striker was unable to finish Fiorentina's 1-0 win over Napoli because of the injury and it was feared he had aggravated his previous injury, even if coach Vincenzo Montella was optimistic after the final whistle on Sunday.

"I'm sorry for the lad because he was doing all he could to recover, but we're all relieved that the injury does not seem serious," Montella told corrieredellosport.

A subsequent scan will be performed in a week's time to assess how well the ligament has healed before deciding on the next course of action. However, Gomez will miss Fiorentina's clash with AC Milan on Wednesday night with former Rossoneri striker Alessandro Matri returning.
